Fjordland, New Zealand Cruise Port

Fjordland (or Fiordland) is located near the southwest corner of New Zealand’s South Island. Most of the region consists of Fiordland National Park, a glorious area that features the snow-capped Southern Alps, deep cold lakes, and a steep-walled western valley that was carved by glaciers and now sits on the ocean floor. Step valleys like these are known as fjords in Scandinavian, and therefore this park shares a variation of that name. It’s the largest of New Zealand’s 14 National Parks. Hikers and climbers love this park because it doesn’t have many man-made trails and instead visitors must rely on deer tracks or blaze their own path. Fiordland National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage area with 2.9 million acres of protected coastal land. The geology is exceptional, including Mitre Peak which is very tall and shaped like a bishop’s hat. The wildlife and amazing scenery have made this location one of the country’s most popular tourist destination.

• Visit Lake Te Anau, New Zealand’s second largest lake. In a peaceful area surrounded by forest on all sides, this is a perfect place to feel like you’ve gotten away from it all.
   
• Explore Te Anau’s Glowworm Caves. Guided tours will bring you and a small party well into the cave’s depths to gaze upon thousands upon thousands of the luminous worms that reside there.
