How do you get the title "Best Island in the World"? In the case of Boracay, a small island in Western Visayas region of the Philippines, it's by winning numerous awards from travel publications and agencies for your amazing white-sand beaches. Even though tourism didn't start in earnest until the 1970s, it only took a couple of decades for the beaches to start getting accolades. Not bad for an island whose coconut and other fruit trees didn't even exist here until the early 20th century, when they were planted by Sofia Gonzales Tirol and husband Lamberto Hontiveros Tirol; they took ownership of multiple properties on the island and started the development process. Despite being a small island, the warm temperatures all year long and loads of activities make cruising here a tropical dream come true. Here are some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Boracay, Philippines:

White Beach is the island’s commercial center, and it’s off-limits to motorized vehicles. Once you’re done soaking up the sun’s rays, it’s easy to rent a mountain bike to get around.
Water sports include parasailing, diving, jet-skiing, wakeboarding, and speed boating. To explore other islands in the area, you can rent a native sailboat (called a paraw) or a motorized outrigger (called a banca).
Take in the view of the island from the Mount Luho View Deck, which gives a 360 peek at the area below. Either take the stairs (which some find difficult to climb), or pay for a buggy or bicycle taxi. It's a great place to take photos, especially if the crowds are still hanging out on the beach.
There is no shortage of places to eat and drink on Boracay. Thanks to its location, fresh seafood is abundant. You can even purchase items at the D’Talipapa Market and have them prepared at the nearby Plato D’Boracay – for a charge far less than you'd pay on the beach for similar items.
