Bintulu, Malaysia Cruise Port

Bintulu is a town that is located in the central area of Sarawak Malaysia. The population of the region is estimated to be around 114,000. Rajah James Brooke founded the town when he built a fort in it. The first Italian botanist visited the town in 1867. Bintulu was initially mainly focused on fishing until 1969. It is at this time when oil and gas reserves were first discovered offshore. The discovery of the reserves was a major boost to the region and helped it become the center of energy of intensive industries. These are namely the Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis plant, Bintulu combined cycle power plant and Malaysia LNG plant. Over time the town expanded its economy and focused on other industries such as palm oil processing, wood-waste processing, cement manufacturing and oil palm and forest plantations. A good way to learn about the culture of the area is by visiting the local villages. Kampung Jepak is a fishing village in the area whose residents still stick to cultural practices. Some of the daily activities in the village are belacan manufacturing, and sago processing.
The Bintulu Tua Pek Kong temple which is located near Tamu Bintulu was built in the 1890s and is a building worth visiting. The architecture is spectacular and it has rich history. It is believed that it was built in order to help purge Bintulu from evil spirits.
The Similajau National Park has rocky headlands, sandy beaches, forests and jungle streams. It is a recreational resource and is rich in flora and fauna. A visit to the park gives visitors the opportunity to see a wide range of animals and beautiful scenery.
A good place to get a good view of the area is the Kidurong tower which is situated at Tanjung Kidurong. It is an observation tower that offers a great view of the Bintulu gas and oil facilities after nightfall.
