Arles, France Cruise Port

When you look at Van Gogh’s famed Starry Night painting, you are looking at Arles. In fact, Arles was so inspiring to Van Gogh he produced more than 300 paintings. This French town is located off the banks of the Rhone River in the southern part of the country. The town is quaint and quiet and known for its markets, but that wasn’t always the case. In the 4th and 5th centuries it was used as the headquarters for Roman Emperors. During Roman control, an aqueduct, mills, an amphitheater and baths were built. Even Frederick Barbarossa, a Holy Roman Emperor, was coroneted in Arles in 1178.Featured below are a few of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Arles, France:

  • Learn about Arles’ Roman history at the Musee de l’Arles et de la Provence Antique. This museum tells the story of Arles from 2500 BC to 500 AD.
  • Take the Van Gogh Trail, a self-guided tour that takes you to many of Vincent Van Gogh’s favorite spots from when he lived and worked in the town.
  • Attend a Provencal bullfight where the bull is not killed, but rather men must fight to remove a tassel from the bull’s horns.
  • Take some pictures. Van Gogh painted his landscapes, but now Arles is home to France’s National School of Photography.
  • Check out the beautiful produce from Provence at the town’s famed produce markets held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
