Aldabra is the second largest coral atoll in the world. It is located in the Aldabra Group of islands situated in the Indian Ocean. They are part of the Seychelles. The island is extremely isolated and uninhabited. Aldabra has not been exploited by humans, and its island fauna is distinct. This includes the Aldabra Giant Tortoise. Aldabra is a designated World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is one of the two World Heritage Sites designated by UNESCO in Seychelles. Aldabra was historically referred to as Al-Khadra or Al-Hadra. From as early as the 16th century the islands were known to the Arabs and Persians who are attributed to have given them their names. A new bird was recently discovered on Aldabra. In May 2013, The Alcedo vintsiodes was the first Madagascar Kingfisher confirmed in Seychelles that was accepted as a new species located in Seychelles. Cruising to the port presents a good opportunity to view the newly discovered species.
