President's Message
The Spirit of the Games
Although I was just a young boy at the time, the most exciting and memorable sporting victory I have ever witnessed has to be the 1980 "Miracle on Ice." This was the year that a young US men's hockey team, made up of amateur and college players, toppled the "unbeatable" Soviet Union hockey power house at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. USA then went on to beat Finland, to claim the gold medal.
Looking back to the build-up of that 1980 game, I can remember feeling how the Soviets were something akin to unstoppable robots. They were "perfect" in their execution, "never" made mistakes, and I almost thought of them as super-human, or maybe even non-human.
One snowed-in evening this month, I let my 7 and 10 year old boys stay up late with me to watch the Vancouver 2010 winter Olympics on television. Having just cheered US men's mogul skiing competitor Bryon Wilson on to an Olympic bronze medal, my 7 year old asked... Read More»

The Cruise Web: Celebrating 16 Years in Business
Employee Profile

Andy Gustafson: Cruise Consultant
Andy Gustafson
Cruise Consultant
Hobbies: Traveling, reading, writing, watching sports
Favorite Itinerary: Mediterranean
Favorite Food: Pizza (because he once owned a pizza restaurant), Anything spicy
Favorite Olympic Event: Soccer
This month's Employee Profile is Cruise Web's own Olympic expert, Andy Gustafson. Andy is the only member of The Cruise Web who can say that they've witnessed Olympic glory in person. He has attended the Olympics in Atlanta, as well as other International world class events such as three World Cups, so what better choice for than our own Olympic expert?
In 1996, Andy was lucky enough to witness soccer, volleyball and track and field, including seeing Michael Johnson winning the Gold Medal in the 200m dash. According to Andy, seeing history being made was a gold medal for him, but a close silver medal was being around people from all over the world. "The Olympics is one of the coolest atmosphere's I've ever been a part of, along with the World Cup" says Andy.
In fact, that is one of the things that Andy likes about cruising. Traveling with and getting to know a diverse group of people from all over the globe is what motivates him as a Cruise Consultant. Andy's favorite cruise so far? "That is a tough call, I've enjoyed all my cruises. A cruise is like golf, the worst day on a cruise is still better than the best day in the office." His next cruise will feature a tour of a ship yard in Germany and a one night test run on a new ship.
Also, Andy and his wife recently welcomed into this world a future 2028 Olympian, Maggie Gustafson. Maggie joins her big brother Max in making sure their parents "medal" in sleep deprivation.
The Current Spotlight: Cruising Historic Olympic Sites
While the Olympics and cruising may seem completely opposite at first glance, a closer look reveals the two are quite similar. Both the Olympics and cruising celebrate the world and its many people and cultures. The Olympics celebrate the world by bringing people across the globe together to showcase the skill of highly trained athletes. Cruising...

Recreating the Games at Sea
by Andy G., Cruise Consultant
The Olympics. The word stirs memories of sporting legends; Jim Thorpe, Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Mary Lou Retton, Dorothy Hamill, Michael Phelps, Dewan and Dave. Dewan and Dave? Well, yes. Last year these two put on a sporting exhibition that will have people talking for years.
I arranged a cruise for some 30 of my friends last spring (because a cruise is just that much better with friendly faces aboard). Shortly after boarding and discovering all of the games available to passengers, two of my friends decided to find out which one of them was the better athlete.
