Photo Highlight |
We're excited to turn our focus towards river cruising in this month's Current in the hopes that we can shed some light on this fascinating and rapidly growing cruise segment. This month's river cruising photo highlight comes courtesy of The Cruise Web's very own Gloria Hanson and showcases one of the many historic castles located along the banks of the Rhine River! |

Manager's Insight |
River Cruising! |
"The journey not the arrival matters." - T.S. Eliot |
As a kid, my family and I took a lot of road trips together. We'd load up the car, I'd squeeze in with my brother, sister and the dog in the backseat and haul off to wherever our crazy family's schedules required our attendance. I remember how painful those car rides could be, and how the anxiety was directly proportional to the greatness of the destination. |
Fortunately, cruising has made the ride as fun and exciting as the destination itself. I often hear clients tell our cruise consultants, "I don't care where it goes, just get me on a ship!" And more and more, that ship is a river cruise ship. Many of the world's rivers act as the very heart of the countries and cities that sit upon their banks. What better way to experience true cultural immersion than to travel the very thing that shaped the development of its surrounding areas? |
The best part is that river cruising can be what you want it to be. It has the allure of backpacking through Europe combined with the amenities of a 5 or 6 star hotel. And did I mention the journey is the best part? From port to port, the ship cuts through some of the most beautiful and dramatic landscapes ever created. |
Please enjoy this month's River Cruising edition of The Current. You'll find lots of information and first-hand river cruise experience. And when you're ready, let us know how we can help create your perfect journey! |

Fresh off of her first river cruise, this month's Employee Profile is our own Alison Clark. Alison is the Accounting Manager at The Cruise Web and has been here for three years. Although she's not a cruise consultant, she's still making the most of the perks that come along with working in the industry. So Alison, how was that Rhine river cruise you just stepped off of? "It was great. I didn't know what to expect going into it. I brought my mom with me and I was worried I'd be the youngest person on board, but was happy to see that wasn't the case." Alison was one of a few Cruise Web employees who took a cruise from Amsterdam, Holland to Basel, Switzerland. "There were definitely different age ranges on board; there were two couples on their honeymoon who were in their early 20's and another family with a teenage daughter. It was great to meet people from all over." |
Alison discovered her passion for accounting while working as a receptionist for a non-profit in Washington, DC. As her job duties expanded, she found herself helping the Finance Director more and more. "We had a CPA that came in every few days and I thought, 'I'm already doing most of the things he's getting paid for, this is something I could do!'" Alison got her undergrad in two and a half years from Howard University before starting her career first in public accounting, then in commercial real estate. "There is definitely a noticeable difference in the people that I work with now at The Cruise Web. This is an open, friendly, team-oriented environment and we aren't as departmentalized as past companies that I've been with." |
But it's not all roses in the Clark household. "My son Terrence was a little jealous because I took my mom on this river cruise and not him. I had to promise him that I'd take him one day, in the near future. I just have not defined 'near future' yet! And the baby? She just wants to get on a boat!"

My First River Cruising Experience |
By Sherry Jefferson, Senior Cruise Consultant |
Last month I wrote about the advantages of small-ship cruising and this month, in a similar vein, I wanted to share my very recent (and very first) river cruise experience with Uniworld Boutique River Cruises. |
I left on March 22nd to spend two days in Amsterdam prior to the March 25th sailing of the new SS Antoinette from Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection. The SS Antoinette is one of the new long ships and this was to be her first sailing of the season going from Amsterdam to Basel for the Castles on the Rhine tour, but... |
