On the banks of the Huangpu River, Shanghai has a long tradition as the doorway to China. Penang Island became the first British settlement in the Straits of Malacca under the terms of an agreement with the Sultan of Kedah in 1786. The island was developed as an outpost of the East India Company, with the settlement then known as Georgetown becoming a sizable port. A rich variety of cultures developed around the port, with Arabs, Indians, Chinese and other Asians attracted by the opportunities for prosperity. Now known as Penang, this busy port city has been poetically described as the "Pearl of the Orient."

Bangkok is a city of endless fascination.
