Grenada with Princess Cruises

Grenada has been dubbed "Spice Island" because of the impressive amounts of nutmeg, cloves, mace, cinnamon, ginger and cocoa grown here. And the dense forests and colorful markets have long attracted visitors to its fragrant shores. Covering this volcanic island are cascading rivers and lush rainforests, plus centuries-old spice plantations and rum distilleries still using traditional methods of production.

Grenada is the Caribbean's "Isle of Spice" -- one of the world's major producers of nutmeg, mace, clove, cinnamon, and cocoa. Indeed, the fragrant aroma of spice seems to envelop the island's emerald hillsides, tropical forests, and sun-drenched beaches. Grenada is truly a feast for the senses. Americans, of course, may remember the island from the 1983 U.S. military intervention. Over two decades later, Grenada is again an ideal vacation spot. No building here may be built higher than a coconut palm. The majority of hotels are small and family owned. St. George's Harbor is a picture-perfect postcard of an idyllic Caribbean anchorage.

    Popular Attractions
  • Grand Etang National Park.
This national park offers miles of trails and scenery. Hike the Lake Circle Trail that offers panoramic views of the lush green forest and the pristine waters of the extinct volcano's crater lake.
  • Fort Frederick.
This smaller fort built by the British and perched atop Richmond Hill has a commanding vantage point that offers an amazing view of Grenada and its natural harbor.
  • Fort George.
Once a location of strategic importance, the gorgeous views overlooking the harbor entrance are what make this fortification such a popular attraction today.
  • Annandale Falls.
A picturesque and lush grotto, this waterfall cascades down 30 feet into a pool of water that's deep enough for a dip, or for the daring, a dive from the cliffs above.
  • Spices of Grenada.
Spice gardens and plantation tours are a Grenada must-do. Inhale the scent of cinnamon, cocoa and cloves at historic Dougaldston Spice Estate or visit Gouyave Nutmeg Station for its "Black Gold."
  • Grand Anse.
This tourist town has resorts, restaurants, a thriving nightlife and a famed beach that is an idyllic crescent of sand shaded by coconut palms with a gentle turquoise surf.
  • Morne Rouge.
Situated at the very end of Grand Anse, this beach is one of the best. The water is so clear, you'll be able to see the colorful fish swimming up to 5 feet beneath you!
  • River Tubing.
The thrill of riding the island rapids is easily satisfied at the Balthazar River. In a raft surrounded by rushing water and a tropical rainforest canopy, this Grenada adventure is always a splash.

Scenes Of Grenada & Grand Anse Beach

Board your non-air- conditioned mini- van and enjoy a narrated drive through the picturesque capital of St. George's, passing the Government House on your way to Fort Frederick. Begun by the French in 1779 and completed by the English in 1791, the fort offers a fantastic view of the town and the harbor below. Following a brief tour at the fort, drive through Woodlands in the sugar cane belt and pay a brief visit to a small rum distillery for a tasting. Then head for the resort area of Grand Anse Beach, where you are served a complimentary drink and enjoy approximately an hour and a half to swim or relax before returning to the ship. Changing rooms are available at the beach.

4wd Adventure To Sulphur Pond

Board you open-air 4WD vehicle and drive through St. George's to Clabony Sulfur Pond in the island interior. Your route travels winding roads through tropical rain forests, passing small villages. Photo stops are featured during your journey, and complimentary soft drinks are available. Hike for approximately 15 minutes through the rain forest to the pond, where you have approximately 30 minutes to relax in the warm waters and drink in the tranquil surroundings. Continue to Grand Etang Lake in Grand Etang National Park, situated 1,900 feet above sea level. Enjoy a complimentary beverage while drinking in views of the lake, located in the crater of an extinct volcano. Your return route to the ship's tender dock features a panoramic photo opportunity.

Morne Gazo Nature Hike & Beach

Board your non-air-conditioned transportation and drive through St. George over the old Fort Road for a photo stop of the picturesque harbor, on the way to Morne Gazo. This conical hill rises some 1,140 feet above sea level and is forested with semi- deciduous trees - the last forest of its kind on the island. At the trailhead receive a short briefing and a complimentary bottle of water. The trail, made of crushed nutmeg shells, ascends 200 feet and is approximately one mile long. Throughout the trek, your guide points out the tropical trees and plants, several of which are used in local medicines and remedies. At the summit, a lookout platform built around a large tree offers panoramic views of Point Salines and the surrounding countryside. Hike back to the trailhead, meet your transportation, and drive to Grand Anse Beach, where you have approximately one hour to swim, relax and enjoy a rum punch, local beer or soft drink. Changing facilities are available.

Hike To Seven Sisters Water

Board your non-air-conditioned transportation and drive through the picturesque capital of St. George's on the way to Grand Etang Lake, situated 1,900 feet above sea level in the crater of an extinct volcano. Following this brief photo stop, drive to the trailhead for spectacular Seven Sisters Falls. The approximately 40- minute hike follows a narrow trail that is quite steep, slippery and muddy. Hikers encounter protruding rocks and roots and must ford a small stream. During the trek, your guide points out tropical flora including strangler vines, wild nutmeg trees, heliconias and ginger lilies. Seven Sisters is actually two falls, one spilling into the other, and both feature big rock pools suitable for swimming. You have ample time to take photos, enjoy a complimentary beverage, relax, or swim in the cool, clear mountain waters before the hike back. Meet your transportation at the trailhead for the return to ship.
