A scenic drive explores the Shimabara Peninsula and visits Shimabara ' a classic 17th century 'castle town.' Tour the castle and its museum before strolling through a samurai village that preserves the ways of the warrior class. See Mizunashihonjin, a small village completely buried during the 1991 eruption of Mt. Fugen.
- WHAT YOU VISIT
Shimabara Peninsula - The city of Shimabara lies approximately 50-miles east of Nagasaki. A classic "castle town," Shimabara flourished in the early 17th century after the completion of its formidable castle. Tour the castle and visit its small museum, which features an exhibit on early Christianity in Japan, as well as displays of feudal swords and armor. Afterwards, take a walking tour of well-preserved Shimabara and visit a "samurai village" where the ways of Japan's warrior class are kept alive.
Mizunashihonjin - This small village was buried by ash during an eruption of Mt. Fugen in 1991 in which forty-eight people died. A few roofs remain visible above the ash and debris. The city of Shimabara preserved the village as a memorial.

- WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Board your motorcoach, and travel northeast from Nagasaki, passing picturesque Ariake Bay (weather permitting) en route to the mountainous Shimabara Peninsula.

The drive between Nagasaki and Shimabara is approximately two hours each way.
This tour involves climbing steep stairs and crossing uneven ground. Wear comfortable, low-heeled walking shoes.
Passengers should bring local currency for any purchases.
