Lantau Island is twice the size of Hong Kong Island ' but only 25,000 people live there. Take a guided walking tour and explore a traditional fishing village with its colorful boats and stilt houses. Visit popular Po Lin Monastery and view the world's largest outdoor, seated bronze Buddha.
- WHAT YOU VISIT
Lantau Island - The largest outlying island of Hong Kong, Lantau is twice the size of Hong Kong Island with a mere fraction of its population - just some 25,000 souls live there. Much of the island is designated parkland.
Tai O Fishing Village - The people of this traditional fishing village live much the same life as their forebears did over a century ago. Your visit includes an approximately 30-minute walking tour of "Hong Kong's Little Venice." The sights include colorful fishing boats, stilt houses, canals and racks filled with drying fish.
Po Lin Monastery - This Buddhist retreat in Lantau's western hills is the island's most popular attraction. Tour the monastery and view the largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha in the world. Your motorcoach drives to the top of the hill where you can disembark. You can choose to walk down the 268 steps to rejoin your motorcoach or ride down with the bus.
Ngong Ping Village - This cultural themed village has been designed to reflect the spiritual integrity of the Ngong Ping area. "Walking with the Buddha" chronicles the life of Siddhartha while "Monkey's Tale Theatre" presents a traditional comic tale. You will have time to browse the shops and restaurants.
- PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Cheung Sha Beach - This pristine beach stretches for some two miles along the coast.
- LUNCH
Your visit to Po Lin Monastery includes a traditional Chinese vegetarian lunch prepared at the monastery's refectory. Tea accompanies the meal. (Alcohol is not available at the monastery.)
- WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Board your motorcoach at the pier in Kowloon and drive west across the Tsing Ma Bridge to Lantau Island, home to Hong Kong's new airport. Here you will change to a specially licensed motorcoach to begin your drive along the northern coast, enjoying views of the ocean and the island interior.
- SPECIAL NOTES
The drive between Kowloon and Lantau Island is approximately 90 minutes each way.
Wear comfortable, low-heeled walking shoes.
This tour is only available on voyages with full-day calls in Hong Kong.
