Experience Bangkok by land and water. See the giant statue at the Golden Buddha Temple. Visit the Grand Palace and view the fabled Emerald Buddha. Explore the "Venice of the East" on a Chao Phraya River cruise.
- WHAT YOU VISIT
Wat Trimitr - Better known as the Temple of the Golden Buddha, it houses the world's largest statue of the Buddha - carved in the Sukothai style from solid gold. The Buddha was covered in plaster to protect it from invading armies in the 18th century; it was then "rediscovered" in 1955.
Wat Pra Keo - Known as the Royal Chapel of the Emerald Buddha, this is one of Buddhism's most magnificent monasteries and one of the most celebrated sites in all Thailand. At the heart of the monastery is a Buddha carved from a single piece of emerald-green jasper, perched atop a gilded pedestal.
Grand Palace - Now reserved for royal ceremonies and state occasions, the palace complex was once the residence of the Kings of Thailand. Beautifully situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the palace's major buildings are topped by glittering spires with soaring finials and are decorated with gilt and colored-glass mosaics. Your visit to the palace features a one-hour guided walking tour of the grounds.
- YOUR CHAO PHRAYA RIVER CRUISE
Bangkok has long been hailed as the "Venice of the East." Board your riverboat for a leisurely cruise along the Chao Phraya River and down the canals of the city's Thonburi district. Cruise past Wat Arun - known as the Temple of the Dawn. This wat on the west bank of the Chao Phraya once served as the Royal Chapel. Your cruise also takes in Phra Prang, a 260-foot-high pagoda decorated with ceramic tiles and fragments of multi-colored porcelain.
- SHOPPING
After lunch, wander around the shops for souvenirs, local handicrafts and jewelry items.
- LUNCH
A lunch buffet featuring a range of international dishes is served at a restaurant along the Chao Phraya River.
- WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Board your motorcoach in Bangkok and pass Chinatown and the local wholesale flower market enroute to the Emerald Buddha Temple. After your visit, continue on to the Grand Palace. (Your visit to the Grand Palace involves walking for approximately one hour through open courtyards, exposed to the hot sun and humidity.) After your palace tour, walk a short distance to the Chao Phraya River to board your riverboat.
- SPECIAL NOTES
Suitable attire is required for palace and temple visits. Shorts are not permitted. Women must have their shoulders and knees covered. Turtleneck shirts for men are not allowed. Wear comfortable low-heeled, closed-toe (no open toes or heels) walking shoes. Footwear must be removed before entering temples.
