Russian Heritage Tour

    Enjoy the lush sights of Kodiak and discover how the influence of Russia and the Alutiiq people have endured.

    Your journey begins with a tour down cannery row to learn about the importance of the fishing industry to Kodiak's economy. Stop at the Northern Exposure Art Gallery to view local art. Continue on to the Russian Orthodox Seminary, one of only three in the United States, where a priest guides you on a tour of the "Log Chapel," a replica of the first church built in Kodiak. Learn some of the connections between the Alaska Natives and the Russian Orthodox Church.

    Then, at the Kodiak Inn you are greeted with Russian tea and treats such as borscht, Russian tea cakes and pirozhkis. A local band, the Balalaika Players, performs traditional Russian music as you sip tea and enjoy finger food.

    Your tour concludes with a scenic drive that passes the largest Coast Guard base in the United States, originally built as a naval station during World War II. Possible wildlife sightings may include bald eagles nesting with their eaglets or salmon running in a local stream.
