You'll pass by the Potsdamer Platz, formerly a no man's land between East and West where the first gap in the Berlin Wall was made in 1989, and which is today a pristine block of futuristic glass-and-steel skyscrapers. A few blocks away from here, at the Holocaust Memorial, you'll have another opportunity for a photo stop before making your way over to the famous Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag government building. Enjoy an outside visit to the Charlottenburg Palace, the oldest surviving Prussian palace, and then drive into the former western part of Berlin, along the Kurfuerstendamm, where you'll pass by the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church and the largest department store on the continent of Europe, the KaDeWe. A short drive will take you to Berlin's main train station with more than 80 shops that are all open seven days a week. Depending on the order of the tour and timing, you'll have the opportunity to either spend some time at leisure at the Kurfuerstendamm, Friedrichstrasse or Berlin's Main Train Station, before transferring to the station for your return journey back to Warnemunde. les |

While relaxing and watching the German countryside pass by, you'll be served a light breakfast snack. Upon arrival at one of Berlin's train stations, your local Berlin tour guide will welcome and assist you to board your coach. The first part of your excursion will be a panoramic tour of Berlin with a stop at a remnant of the Berlin Wall and the famous former border crossing, Check-Point-Charlie. From here you'll continue to the Brandenburg Gate, which more than any other monument symbolizes the German and European reunification. Close by you'll pass the Reichstag government building and the newly erected Holocaust Memorial. Drive along the Kurfurstendamm, Berlin's version of the Champs Elysees and bypass the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church before you circle the Gendarmenmarkt, home to the German Dom and the French Dom. Stop for lunch at a traditional German pub-style restaurant and start the second part of your tour by traveling to Potsdam, the capital of the Brandenburg State, with its Baroque city center and numerous palaces. Upon arrival at Lake Wannsee, pass across the Glienicke Bridge where spies were swapped between the American and Soviet sectors during the Cold War. Continue to Cecilienhof Palace, built 1916 in the style of an English country house and the site of the Allied Potsdamer Conference during which the borders of Europe were redrawn after World War II. A historical conference was held here between Churchill, Truman and Stalin to arrange the future of defeated Germany. Your next visit will be to the magnificent centerpiece of Potsdam, and summer residence of Frederick the Great, the Palace of Sanssouci, set above six vineyard terraces and one of the most beautiful remaining examples of French-Prussian Rococo architecture. Depart this UNESCO listed World Heritage Site to see another of Frederick's great palaces and probably one of the most ostentatious palaces ever built by this great king, the New Palais. It is the largest 18th century structure in the Sanssouci Park and served Frederick II as a palace for his guests. Proceed to the train station for your return journey back to Warnemunde.
