The era of the Klondike Gold Rush comes alive in Skagway, the gateway to the Yukon Territory. The Gold Rush was such a boon that by 1898, Skagway was Alaska's largest town with a population of approximately 20,000. Hotels, saloons, dance halls and gambling prospered. However, when gold yields dwindled, so did Skagway's population. Today, Skagway's inhabitants number less than 1,000, yet the town retains the flavor of the Gold Rush era in its historic downtown area.
Your tailor-made tour combines the best that Skagway has to offer. You'll begin your fun-filled tour with a drive along the Klondike Summit Highway. The road runs parallel to the route that the famous WPY railroad is taking and provides scenic views of the train climbing towards the summit. Along the way you'll enjoy breathtaking views during scenic stops at Pitch Falls and the Moore Bridge Turnout, while listening to captivating stories of the "Klondike Gold Rush".
You'll reach the White Pass Summit, the international boundary between the U.S. and Canada, and continue beyond to Fraser, British Columbia. There you'll board the legendary White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad for one of the most fascinating scenic rail journeys in the world. There is no railway quite like this! Retracing the original route to the summit of White Pass in vintage narrow-gauge parlor cars, you'll marvel as this Historic Civil Engineering Landmark descends nearly 3,000 feet in 21miles. A picnic basket which includes coffee, tea or cocoa and an assortment of breakfast pastries, freshly baked scones, muffins and croissants is thoughtfully provided for your enjoyment.
Once back in Skagway, you'll have an informative, award-winning tour onboard the restored 1920s bus owned by the Skagway Street Car Company for an engaging introduction to Skagway. A costumed "conductor" provides non-stop theatrical entertainment for this show on wheels, sharing Skagway's behind-the-scenes tales while pointing out the historic homes. He'll even stop at the Gold Rush Cemetery and tell you about the legendary gunfight between Jefferson Randolph Smith (aka Soapy Smith) and Frank Reid. After this fun and informative tour, you can either be dropped off in downtown Skagway, or be returned directly to your ship.
