A lively blend of French and English cultures, St. George's has steep hills to climb and spectacular views to photograph. The heady scents of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves turn breathing into an exotic experience. The lush nature of Grenada underscores the island's second most popular name - "The Isle of Spice". In fact, there are more spices here per square mile than any other place in the world. Cloves, mace, cocoa, cinnamon, ginger, and a host of other spices call Grenada home. By far the most abundant is nutmeg. Grenada produces a third of the world's supply, and it is the island's biggest export.
Your tour begins at St. George's Pier with a drive through the town of red tiled roofs and spice markets that is Grenada's Capital - St. George. You'll continue along Old Fort Road up to Historic Fort Frederick for a panoramic view of the harbor.
Your tour then proceeds to the Grand Etang National Park, famed to have one of the most unique views in the Caribbean. You'll pause for photos overlooking shimmering Grand Etang Lake, a cobalt blue, extinct volcano crater lake situated a breathtaking 1900 ft above sea level. If you are lucky you might even get to see the shy Mona Monkey.
Tearing your eyes away from the blue of Grand Etang Lake, you will be fascinated by the varying shades of green in the Birchgrove valley as you head to your next stop. Cinnamon, cocoa, banana and some of Grenada's many spices line your route to the unique and authentic 17th century plantation, Belmont Estate. Here you will have the opportunity to observe the workings of a fully functional historic plantation. It's captivating displays document Grenada's traditions and the history of its people. You'll also enjoy the best of true Grenadian hospitality as you feast on a delicious lunch of international cuisine with a totally Grenadian flavor.
After lunch, enjoy a leisurely stroll in the tropical gardens before driving on to visit the oldest functioning water wheel in the Western hemisphere at the River Antoine Sugar Estate and rum distillery. At the end of this delightful tour you will have the chance to sample the rum. All too soon it's time to get back on the coach for the return trip down Grenada's marvelous 'east coast', taking in the scenery before arriving back at the pier.
