The largest of the Leeward Islands, Antigua gleams brightly under the warm Caribbean sun. It's warm climate and easy-going Caribbean ways are alluring attractions for visitors. Antigua boasts 365 superb white beaches, one for every day of the year. It is also well known as a lush playground for the rich and famous. In addition, Antigua is home to a beautiful National Park that encompasses the famous English Harbor and Nelson's Dockyard. Although Antigua achieved its independence in 1981, it continues to bear the unmistakable imprint of centuries of British rule.
Your tour will introduce you to the best Antigua has to offer.
Your experienced tour guide will meet you at the ship to escort you to your air-conditioned transportation for the short journey to St John's Cathedral. On arrival you'll enjoy a guided tour of the Cathedral, which was constructed between 1843 and 1848. The Cathedral (the third building to be erected on the site from 1681) is dominated by 70 ft high twin towers that give it a distinctly baroque flavor. The woodwork and decorations inside the cool interior are well worth the visit.
From there you'll drive along Fig Tree Drive, named for the banana trees that locals call 'figs', through Antigua's Rainforest to the south coast. On your way you'll pass quaint villages with old churches and chattel houses, the epitome of West Indian culture. You'll see many of Antigua's 365 beaches as you travel through to Shirley Heights Lookout for a picture-perfect view of Nelson's Dockyard. Built in the late 1700's, the Lookout offers superb views of English and Falmouth Harbors, and west to the volcanic island of Montserrat. Relax here enjoying a glass of local rum, or fruit punch and cake, while you take in the stunning view.
After your refreshing break you will continue your tour to Nelson's Dockyard. Built in 1725, the Dockyard served as the base for the English naval squadron patrolling the West Indies. As you enter this historic park you are met by your National Park's Guide who leads you on a short, informative walking tour through the dockyard's restored buildings. After the tour you have free time to explore the mall museum, art gallery, gift shop, and boutiques before your coach returns to the ship.
