Discover lush, beautiful Moorea today on your circle island tour. Begin at the mouth of Cook’s
Bay, framed by the craggy walls of the vast and ancient volcanic crater that is the heart of this
spectacular place. First you will see Moua Puta, the tall thumb pierced by a weathered hole near
the top. Then Moorea’s highest peak, Mt. Toheia, appears soaring into the sky at 1207 meters. As
you travel further up the bay Mt. Mauaroa, the cathedral-like shark’s tooth mountain comes into
view. Now the coach begins to climb the narrow but well-paved road up the jagged rock wall.
Your first stop is Marae Tetiiroa, an open-air stone temple that in ancient times was the scene of
human sacrifice. Then it’s on to the Belvedere, a viewpoint high above the rocky spine that
separates Cook’s Bay from Opunohu Bay. Enjoy the breathtaking panoramas around you.
From this high central heart of the island descend to the coast, stopping along the way at
Moorea’s fine agricultural school to admire its experimental vanilla plantation. Then you will
follow the only road that circles the island. This is a photographer’s dream! Enjoy brief stops for
pictures of the rugged interior or the sandy beaches and serene, azure lagoons. The charming
countryside, small villages, and smiling, friendly people will provide memories for a lifetime.
Continue around the southeastern side and through the island’s administrative capital, Afareaitu,
and Vaiare, the inter-island ferry port. Next you will stop at Point Toatea where the renowned
Sofitel Moorea Beach Resort with its white sand beach and overwater bungalows is spread before
you. In the distance, 12 miles across the Sea of the Moon, you will see Tahiti. Here the road again
descends to beach level as you pass through the tiny village of Temae. Beyond it lies the new,
superb Robert Trent Jones designed Green Pearl Golf Course. The road borders the course for
two kilometers and you will see beautifully maintained emerald green fairways contrasting with
the lush natural vegetation of the bordering hillside.
Your next stop is the lovely Moorea Pearl Resort & Spa for a refreshing “cocktail pause.” Enjoy a
restorative mai tai or tropical fruit punch while you nibble on a selection of delicious, exotic
canapes with the beach and placid turquoise lagoon spread before you. Then it’s on to Ron Hall’s
Pearl School for a brief 20-minute lesson in the production cycle of the famed Tahitian black
pearl. Ron will take you through the process, from seeding the nacre to how to evaluate a pearl by
its color, luster and shape. Continue circling Cook’s Bay to the Rotui juice factory and distillery
where you can sample a variety of their products and shop from an array of high quality local
handicrafts before returning to the tender dock and the end of your Moorea adventure!
