Formerly known as Leningrad, St. Petersburg is Russia's second-largest city. It lies on a series of islands on the broad reaches of the mighty Neva River. The network of decorated bridges arching above the numerous waterways and canals is a visual delight.

Begin your tour this morning on a panoramic city tour with photo opportunities, driving along the embankments and streets, and viewing the city's old buildings from the 18th - 19th centuries. You'll drive across the Neva River to view the Spit of Vasilievsky Island. In front of you, the Peter and Paul Fortress is considered to be the birthplace of St. Petersburg. On the grounds of the Fortress is the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral with its 400 ft gilded spire serving as a distinctive, majestic landmark.

Your tour continues with a photo stop at Cruiser Aurora, which took an active part in the Russo Japanese War of 1904-05, but its fame was earned with the blank shots fired from this battleship, said to have triggered the 1917 revolution. From there you'll see one of the main landmarks of St Petersburg - the church of Resurrection of the Spilled Blood.

You'll drive through St Isaac's Square, which is surrounded by a great number of St Petersburg's most famous buildings and monuments. St Isaac's Cathedral, with all its elaborate decorations, is one of the focal points and landmarks of the city. One of the world's largest cathedrals (1818-1958), it took 40 years to build.

Then there's lunch at a local restaurant before you visit the world famous Hermitage Museum. About 3 million pieces of art are housed in the four buildings that make up the palatial surroundings. It is often said that a week would not leave sufficient time to fully explore this remarkable place. You'll have a just few hours for a comprehensive overview of the collection. As you walk through the museum your guide will highlight the most significant pieces and enlighten you as to their historical importance. During your tour you will see the most opulent Gala Rooms of the Winter Palace, but perhaps the most interesting part of the Hermitage collection is the collection of the West European Art. You will see the masterpieces of Leonardo Da Vinci, Rafael, Titian, Velasquez and Rembrandt, etc. In the impressionists and postimpressionists collection you will find works by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse and Picasso. Too soon, you'll rejoin your coach to make your way back to the pier and your ship.
