Prepare to embark on a journey that will take you to some of Barbados's most beautiful and important historical sites. Your tour will begin with a drive north along the West or "Platinum" Coast. This coast is not only home to Holetown, the site where the first settlers landed in 1627, but is also home to the rich and famous.
Arlington House Museum, located in the old merchant settlement and port of Speightstown, is your first stop. Here you will have the opportunity to explore the 18th Century "single house" that closely resembles the single houses of Charleston, South Carolina. You'll learn about schooner trade, plantation life and other aspects of early Barbados when you "visually" meet the business people of Speightstown.
On departing Arlington House you will head towards the east coast of the island past Morgan Lewis Wind Mill. Of the 100s of mills that used to dot the Caribbean, Morgan Lewis is one of the only two intact and restored sugar mills left. The other is at Betty's Hope Estate on the island of Antigua.
From there your drive will take you South along the East Coast of the Island where you will see panoramic views of the Ocean and the rugged Atlantic coastline. This route will take you to your next stop, the quaint Edgewater Inn. You'll spend some time in this most picturesque of settings on the island while enjoying a delicious Bajan buffet lunch. You may relax in the outdoor area, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, or sit inside and enjoy the cool fresh breeze while listening to the local sounds of a steel pan player. Be sure to bring your camera for the many dramatic views!
Following lunch, your tour continues through quaint villages and swaying cane fields to your next stop, Sunbury House, dating back to 1650. It possesses one of the country's superior collections of antiques, including a unique collection of antique carriages. Sunbury Plantation House, located in the tranquil St. Philip countryside, is a living monument to plantation life of a bygone era, carefully restored and lovingly cherished by its owners for posterity and for the enjoyment of generations to come.
On departing this magnificent plantation house you will return to the port.
