The island of Rhodes is most renowned as the site of the former Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The immense statue, built as an offering of thanks to Helios, once straddled the harbor, but was destroyed by an earthquake. From the 12th to 16th centuries, the Knights of St. John established a military base here. During their stay they built streets, houses, churches, and the famous Palace of the Grand Masters.
Today your tour is an immersion into the culture and traditions of Rhodes. During your sightseeing tour of the New Town you'll learn of the historical importance of the port before enjoying a memorable visit to a local home.
Departing from the pier this morning you'll begin your tour with a drive through the New Town of Rhodes, passing by the Mandraki Harbor. You'll also see Fort Nicholas, the site where the Colossus of Rhodes is believed to have stood, Monte Smith, Apollo Temple and the Stadium. Your first visit will be to a traditional 19th century house. The decorated interior of this house is furnished with authentic period furniture and household items typical of the 19th century.
From there your driving tour continues to the traditional village of Archangelos. This picturesque village has a history of carpet and pottery making dating back many hundreds of years. It is among the few villages of the island where old men and women can still be seen in traditional dress.
The women of Archangelos are the experienced rug weavers. You will have the opportunity to observe their handiwork and also enjoy a demonstration of their pottery making. Following the craft exhibition, you'll be invited to visit one of the traditionally decorated local houses where the landlady has prepared homemade bread and local delicacies for your refreshment.
Bidding farewell to your host, it will be time to return to the pier filled with great memories of what could be called the Eighth Wonder of the world - the legendary hospitality of the Greeks.
