Bergen City & Troldhaugen Concert - BN01

Bergen, the second largest city in Norway, is charmingly placed between mountains and fjords. The city was founded in 1070 and is the main capital of the fjord country. Starting your tour at the quay, you will pass the venerable King Haakon's Hall, the Rosenkranz Tower, and Bryggen - a row of Hanseatic timbered houses with characteristic pointed gables facing the harbor.
Further along, you will pass the bustling Fish and Flower Market, the City Park, and the Grieghall - the concert hall of Bergen. You will enjoy the sight of green slopes and ragged mountains surrounding the city as you drive through suburbs with old well-kept houses and gardens.

After a short stroll, you will arrive at Troldhaugen - home to composer Edvard Grieg for 22 years, beautifully situated on Nordaas Lake. From the concert hall, you can see the composer's cabin charmingly placed below the house where Grieg composed many of his famous pieces. He was ultimately laid to rest there with his wife Nina. One of Norway's best-known pianists will give you a glimpse of Edvard Grieg's life with musical examples from various periods.

The excursion continues back to the city center and the peninsula of Nordnes with its typical 19th century white painted wooden houses. On both sides of the peninsula, you will see the harbors. You will pass Fredriksberg Fortress and the Aquarium of Bergen before returning to the port.

Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 0.40 mile over gravel surfaces with 20 steps. Photography is not permitted in the Troldhaugen House.

Bryggen Wharf & Its History - BN05

Bergen is always referred to as a city with a warm atmosphere and this walking tour will undoubtedly confirm this claim as well as lead you through its more than 800 years of history. You will gain a lively impression of the medieval life in Bergen in which Hanse merchants played a significant role.

The coach will deliver you to the city center (when the ship is docked at the Skoltegrunnskaien Pier, a coach transfer is not necessary), where the tour will proceed on foot. The starting point for the walk is at the medieval castle Haakon's hall, a most imposing building from the 13th century. You will reach Schotstuene, the assembly rooms, where the merchants once gathered for warm meals, held court meetings, and taught their apprentices.
The walk continues along Bryggen - the wharf - the characteristic pointed gables facing the harbor: a unique example of Norwegian medieval architecture. This harbor front was the scene of thriving commercial activity through the 18th century.
Today, Bryggen is on UNESCO's World Heritage List and a growing area for arts and crafts, where painters, weavers, and artisans have their workshops. You will visit the Hanseatic Museum, one of the best preserved wooden buildings in Bergen and furnished in the 17th century style, the interior gives an intimate picture of merchant life in Hanse's day.
After the visit, you may explore the city further on your own or take the shuttle back to the ship. (Shuttle service is not necessary/provided when the ship is docked at the Skoltegrunnskaien Pier.)

Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 2 miles over cobblestone and uneven surfaces, hilly terrain and 10 to 25 steps at the Hanseatic Museum. Comfortable walking shoes and appropriate weather gear are recommended. Tour order may vary but all listed sites will be covered.

Hiking Mount Floien - BN04

Transfer by coach to the city center (when the ship is docked at the Skoltegrunnskaien Pier, a coach transfer is not necessary), where your tour will proceed on foot.
You will pass Bergenhus Fortress and the old picturesque merchant buildings of the Bryggen, the oldest section of town, dating back to the Hanseatic era.
Continuing along the wharf, you will proceed to the lower station of the Mt. Floibanen Funicular where you will board the funicular.
During the 8-minute ride, you will travel to the top of Mount Floien, some 1,000 feet above sea level, enjoying the continually expanding view of the port and harbor below.

At the top of Mount Floien, you will walk along some of the many gravel paths above the city of Bergen. Your guide will escort you through the hilly woodlands and down to the idyllic Lake Skomakerdiket. Depending on weather conditions and visibility; your guide will lead you through some of the many backwood trails, possibly reaching Rundemannen. At approximately 1,800 feet, this is the mountain's highest point. A leisurely downhill walk will return you to the upper funicular station for your return to the city center and the ship.

Note: Participants will be required to climb approximately 800 feet over a total of 5 miles over varying terrain. A portion of the route will be uphill so guests should be in good physical condition. Low heeled, comfortable walking or hiking shoes and comfortable, loose clothing are recommended. Participants should be aware that there are certain inherent risks involved in any hiking excursion. A parent or guardian must accompany children under the age of 16 years. This tour will operate in all weather conditions so participants should take appropriate weather gear with them, carry a backpack for belongings and take bottled water with them to stay hydrated during the hike.
