Channel Islands Kayak Adventure

This sea-kayak adventure along the beautiful Inside Passage is ideal for those who want to experience the incredible natural history, beauty, and wildlife-viewing opportunities of southeast Alaska from the water. Leave town on the Glacier- Highway and travel to the spectacular waters of Juneau's Channel Islands, stopping along the way for an incredible view of the Mendenhall Glacier. Your guide will provide kayak instruction before you begin your adventure. Then, with the Chilkat Mountains as a backdrop, you'll explore one of Juneau's most scenic areas. Your guide will provide interesting and informative commentary on native history, culture, and wildlife. Approximately 6 hours.

Evening Whale Quest

Enjoy a 25-minute motorcoach ride to scenic Auke Bay, where you'll board a high- speed catamaran specifically designed for wildlife viewing. Relaxing in the warm, comfortable cabin, you will set out to explore Stephen's Passage, a pristine marine wilderness bordered by snow-capped peaks and glaciers. Stephen's Passage is the world- renowned summer feeding grounds of the humpback whale. Once whales have been sighted, your skilled captain will gently maneuver the vessel to allow exceptional viewing and photographic opportunities at a safe distance. If the whales join to form a cooperative feeding group, the vessel's engines will be silenced and an underwater hydrophone deployed so that you may even get to experience their incredible 'singing'. Throughout the cruise your onboard naturalist will explain the humpback whale's behavior and habitat. While enjoying the peaceful ambiance of Alaska's long evening glow you'll be treated to a delicious variety of appetizers, accompanied by complimentary beverages. There will also be a no-host bar with a selection of beer and wine. The operators of this tour guarantee you will see a whale. If not, you'll receive a $100 cash refund ($50 refund per child) as you disembark. But don'tanticipate a refund; in the past six years, whales have been sighted on every tour! Fly-fishing Adventure via Floatplane

Combine the challenge and excitement of fly-fishing with the breathtaking beauty of Alaska from the seat of your Alaska floatplane. After a discussion with your guide, who will outfit you for the day's adventure, you will fly with an experienced bush pilot to a remote stream or tidal estuary in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Depending on the time of the year, you will be fishing for one of the 4 varieties of pacific salmon or Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout. In addition to the excellent fishing opportunities, you will enjoy a view of the rain forest and its varied wildlife that few visitors see. You may share the stream with eagles, otters, and occasionally bears. A shoreside snack is served. Historic Gold Mining and Panning Adventure

Relive Juneau's gold rush history and pan for gold in the authentic setting of Gold Creek. A costumed prospector will guide you in a comfortable 24- passenger van through a historic residential area en route to Last Chance Basin. You will trace the route taken by Joe Juneau and Richard Harris in their search for gold over 100 years ago. Near the famous Alaska-Juneau gold mine, one of the world's largest hard-rock mining operations, you will get hands-on experience panning for gold in Gold Creek. Guaranteed gold! Our prospector then recaptures the history of Juneau's gold discovery and hard rock mining as we view the remnants of the mine. Approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Mendenhall Lake Canoe Adventure

Paddle to the face of the dramatic Mendenhall Glacier in a 12-person traditional native canoe. Navigate the shimmering waters of Mendenhall Lake while your guide tells tales and traditional legends. Imagine a time when the regions first people, the Tlingit, traversed the waters of southeast Alaska in hand-carved canoes. The journey across the iceberg-studded lake will transport you to a world of stunning beauty and ancient traditions. Land on the shore near Nugget Falls for a snack before paddling back across the lake. Experience an exhilarating outdoor adventure that you won'tsoon forget.     On this exciting excursion you will:
  • Get a glimpse of a truly northern pastime. Learn about the life of sled dogs and their musher and see these dogs in action when they pull you on a fast and thrilling summertime ride.
  • As you head out of Juneau and across to the island of Douglas, your guide will acquaint you with the history of this community.
  • At the kennels, you will meet the dogs and climb onto a wheeled sled, custom made for running during the snow-less summer months.
  • The husky team will whisk you along a wooded trail through some of southeast Alaska's beautiful temperate rain forest. Spruce and hemlock trees and 12" thick spagma moss surround you on this unique one mile ride.
  • Then, sit down and enjoy a presentation by an Iditarod Veteran, have refreshments and cuddle with some adorable husky puppies.

    On this truly fascinating excursion you will:
  • Learn the history of this mill constructed in 1913, the Alaska Gastineau Mill was designed to crush and recover gold from 6,000 tons of rock per day.
  • Take a short ride to the site of the mill ruins, your knowledgeable driver sets the stage as you make your way up the mountain through picturesque Sheep Creek Valley.
  • From there, follow the path of the ore to the Railroad Superintendent's house.
  • Enjoy a display of different mining techniques and equipment, then marvel at the view of Gastineau Channel far below.
  • Meet your guide who will entertain you with stories and history as he leads you on your tour.
  • Venture underground into the conveyer tunnel through which crushed ore was transported to the mill.
  • Don hard hats and proceed along a boardwalk into the 360-foot long tunnel. Inside, experienced miners demonstrate mining equipment and give you a feel for the mining lifestyle.
  • Return to the mill site, where crushed rocks were further processed and gold recovered.
  • Visit the gift shop and then your driver will bring you up to date on the mining industry's current role in Juneau as you return to town.
